I nearly had to burn the house down  the other day.

Pulled the shower curtains shut and dislodged what I thought was a clump of pet fur. Reached down to pick it up and it was...wiggly (I’m slightly blind without glasses).

Speaking of which, how does one go about getting rid of ants?.

Probably a month ago I went to bed early while my wife was still up and maybe 15 minutes after I fell asleep she runs back, shakes me awake and in complete terror hollars something like ‘I need your help!’

So I stagger not-quite awake as she drags me down the hallway and points to the largest spider I have ever seen on the wall under the TV!

It was a wolf spider that had to be the size of my damn palm - adrenaline has now fully woken me up and I grab the cordless vacuum as there isn’t quite enough space to securely smash it where it is. For if I miss I will spend the next 2 hours tearing apart our entertainment center and living room until I find and kill it.

Sucked it up into the vacuum and thing crunched as it bounced around in there. I then put the vacuum in the garage to be dealt with later. It took me like an hour to wind down enough to go back to sleep and my wife didn’t sleep a wink that night...

I found a spider in the garage that had trapped a big roach in its net and was eating it. I thought about clearing it all out, but I wanted it to stand as a warning to all other roaches to stay out of my garage.

Of course you would say that.

We get those tiny pharaoh ants, or sugar ants. I made a bunch of baits using sugar, water, and borax. I placed them in small plastic cups on the hood of the car, they were all swarming over the baits the next day, and they were all gone the day after that. I do the same in my kitchen, where they show up every spring.

I’m sure you’d love to hear about how I let a spider live in the rear view mirror of the Forester for a few months... it seemed friendly enough...

We used to feed horseflies to spiders around the deck when I was a kid. I don’t have anything to feed them here and I don’t want to personally become lunch.

And the best part, if the kiddos get into the traps, the borax won’t hurt them. The tough part is not smushing the ants you see around the trap. You have to leave them alone!

The thing was most likely utterly harmless, yet our reactions would have been the same. Here in TX, we get those giant damned cockroaches in our house. When we lived in Houston, the giant damned could FLY! Those things utterly freak me out, and one night we found one in our bedroom but it got away before I could kill it. It was a rough night.

Yeah, it was a wolf spider and th ey normally get left alone but it was large and in the house so he had to go.

We also have brown recluses here so your have to be careful. My wife got bit by one last year and the spot nearly turned necrotic. S he had to spend a month off that leg with us changing the dressing daily, it was not fun.

Giant flying cockroaches are terrifying to think about though

I picked up my detailing bag in the garage last year and had a black widow run out of it. I’ve never grabbed a blow torch that fast in my entire life.

I’ve seen one of those in my life. That was enough.

My aunt who lives in North Carolina brought one home in her groceries, it was on some bananas.

When I was a kid I was outside playing with a big wolf spider like that. Wolf spiders were fairly common where we lived, I saw them a lot, so they didn’t scare me. I had it on the end of a stick walking around with it, I went up to the house, to um “show” my sister, my Dad yelled at me “don’t bring that thing near the house, or it’ll be in your bed tonight.”

So I went and put it back in the woods. Later that night we were in the living room, watching the Simpsons I think, when my sister screams, and I see that same spider on the ottoman next to her. Without hesitation my Dad grabbed a slipper and smacked it.

I felt really bad cuz if I just left it alone it wouldn’t have ended up dead.

That is by far the scariest part of needing glasses. I never thought about that until I married a girl that nearly blind without them
